You can configure the printers, up to four of them with a Raspberry Pi.

INSTALL REPETIER SERVER RASPI INSTALL

Oddly enough, the “easy install” image has some more commands available that aren’t in the download and install version. Then I found the link to the “image” that I could use Etcher with to write to the SD card. I, of course, installed it the hard way first.

INSTALL REPETIER SERVER RASPI DRIVERS

Let alone any drivers you need that support the current release. It’s without a doubt in my mind the most awkward single board computer I’ve ever used because of its sudo/git/make/nano and trying to find where all the configs are. Unless it’s a dog park, sans the dogs so you know what’s left. Raspbian isn’t a refreshing walk in any park. When I started testing Repetier Server, the first hurdle was installing it. When I had one printer, I ran Octoprint and Astrobox for over two years just fine, albeit slower than what my printer was capable of.

It would free up one Raspberry Pi, its power supply and make managing the files easier because they would be in one location available to both printers. I have two delta printers and Repetier Server looked like it was better suited for me. However you can run Repetier Server on Windows or Mac so, five, total. Their documentation says five printers, but the Raspberry PI only has 4 USB ports. Repetier Server has the built in ability to run up to four printers at the same time. Unfortunately, we can’t compare these three servers on a level playing field. I’m sure there are some but I was running 90mm/s and it was printing. In my tests, I couldn’t find any speed limitations at all. I started off with the limited version for testing purposes.

Repetier Server is a print server that has both a free (limited) version and a pro paid version. Again, faster if the GCODE doesn’t have a lot of curves. In my testing, Astro will run at 55mm/s or slower. Faster if the GCODE doesn’t have a lot of curves.Īstrobox/Astroprint is a forked (subset) of Octoprint so apart from a better UI and cleaner interface that scales to mobile devices, it exhibits the same stutter but because of the lack of plugin support, a higher speed can be obtained before the problem shows up. In my testing, Octoprint will run nicely at 45mm/s or slower. Reportedly it’s not going to be an easy fix because of all the plugin’s that have to be supported. This stutter has also started to appear on cartesian printers.

The bandaid is to lower the resolution in the slicing software (or firmware) or run the printer slower. Octoprint’s biggest failing is that on delta style printers because of the intense calculations made by the Marlin firmware (running on an 8 bit AVR Arduino MEGA), any GCODE with too many short segments causes the printer to stutter.

Testing Performanceįor testing, I always use the same GCODE file, sliced the same way and on two similar printers. Was it merely written about, or coming from a viewpoint of someone who actually used the product for more time than it took to write an article/blog/review. If you ever do research, look for long term. What you’ll find is that there are very few places where you can get information AFTER the install to determine how well it is actually working. There are any number of web sites/blogs on how it’s setup and used. It’s very mature, scads of plugin’s, simple to install, simple to use. So lets take a snapshot of each of them based on using them with a Raspberry PI 3 B+.

Therefore what you might need today may not be what you require in six months time. While it would be nice to assume they are all capable of doing everything you, or I, might ever need a printer server to do, the actual fact is they differ significantly. Octoprint, Astrobox, and Repetier Server. There are three offerings as I mentioned. That would range from definable macro commands to plugin’s that sport everything from a spool length history to whatever the programmer deems the rest the world, or themselves, might need. At which point it can then stream the uploaded file to the printer.įrom this point, anything else the print server does is purely icing on the cake. The file would be stored on the Pi’s microSD card. In the rawest definition, a 3D print server should run on some single board computer, like a Raspberry PI and have the ability to accept an uploaded GCODE file via your local network. Repetier Server I added into my testing mix when I stumbled across a video on YouTube comparing Octoprint to Repetier Server.īut first, let’s define what a 3D print server should do.

This would include AstroBox (Astroprint), Octoprint, and the latest (but not newest) kid on the block, Repetier Server. I’ve been testing 3D print servers for a fairly lengthy time now.
